Advanced Young Artists: Teen Artist + Mentor Exhibition // July 11 – August 9, 2014

AYA_Postcard_FINAL-front (1)

The Contemporary Austin’s Advanced Young Artists education initiative pairs ten professional artist-mentors with ten exemplary high school art students. Together, they work collaboratively over seven months in the artist’s studio space. Hours of conversation, exploration of new mediums, and discoveries related to navigating a multigenerational creative experience culminate in this display of the resulting work from all twenty artists. For more information about Advanced Young Artists, visit Explore for Teens at www.thecontemporaryaustin.org.

Iceberg // May 30 – June 21, 2014

                             ICEBERG 5

Work by the 2016 M.F.A. candidates at the University of Texas at Austin encompassing five disciplines; painting, sculpture, photography, transmedia and printmaking. Each participant selecting a small percentage from the large amount of work made in the past year. Iceberg represents the overall feeling of creating massive amounts of work with the idea that the public will only see a small fraction of this process. With this concept comes the exciting notion of individually displaying snippets of our work while together constructing a truly interdisciplinary show; representing provocative trends within the greater art world through a tiny fraction of artists in Austin.

“Faring Well”: Megan Carney

“Faring Well”: Megan Carney

Opening Reception: Friday, February 21, 2014, 7-11 pm
Exhibition: February 21 – March 15, 2014
Gallery Hours: Saturdays 12-5 pm or by appointment

Teetering between the two- and three-dimensional, Faring Well is a study of memory and imagination through the use of structure, space, color and form. Through built photographs and sculpture, the translation of an imagined world to reality clashes and interacts with the reconstruction of memory.

Here, objects are divorced from their contexts and transfigured into artifacts, voided of meaning through the removal of their touch points to the everyday world.

This decontextualization occurs throughout the work on different scales, from the subject of the photographs, to the sculptural treatment of the photographs themselves, to the experience of the space, where suddenly bright color and idiosyncratic form is king.

In this work, experiments with the sculptural capacity of the photograph explore the uncanny nature of memory and imagination—the reconstruction of remembered experience and the construction of invented space. As a whole, the range of dimensional pieces builds a curated physical space that questions and challenges its own nature.
