The Ambiguous Object
Catalog Release & Exhibition Presented by Cantanker
Opening Saturday, January 22, 7-10 pm
Exhibition Runs Through February 5. Gallery Hours Wed & Sat 12-5 pm & by appointment
“The power of ambiguity is in its present-focus. In every moment we must re-evaluate. In every moment we
comprehend a meaning or a purpose, and in the next we comprehend anew. With the work in this exhibition, ambiguity occurs in a formal sense; the work exists in between two, or sometimes three, different mediums. Photographs appear to be paintings, paintings resemble sculptures, videos allude to paintings, and so on. It is in this formal ambiguity that the ambiguous nature of the uncertainty of traditional mediums is revealed. Herein lies the strength of The Ambiguous Object: ambiguous objects are shape-shifters. Ambiguous objects insist on constant re-consideration.”
Cook & Ruud – Catalog Curators
Cantanker presents the third edition of its annual Artist’s Catalog, curated by think tank Cook & Ruud. C&R conceived this year’s theme “The Ambiguous Object” and chose the work of 23 artists from an open call for entries in summer 2010. The catalog will be released during the opening of the Ambiguous Object exhibition in the gallery at Pump Project Art Complex.
